DCN Africa invites you to join our 'Empowering Africa: Building Media Literacy Capacity' virtual training series! Context 

Ιn the digital age, access to information is unprecedented, yet the ability to critically navigate this vast landscape remains a challenge, particularly in Africa. Our "Empowering Africa: Building Media Literacy Capacity" workshop series is designed to address this challenge head-on by providing individuals across the continent with the essential skills and knowledge to become critical consumers and creators of media content. Through a series of interactive workshops tailored specifically for African contexts, will aim to enhance participants media literacy skills and capacity. Our workshops aim to reach diverse audiences, including students, educators, journalists, community leaders, and policymakers.

Through engaging activities, case studies, and real-world examples, our workshop series will provide participants with practical skills and strategies such as:

Module 1: Introduction to Critical Media Literacy Concepts  

This module serves as an introduction to recent developments of media literacy, covering foundational concepts and skills necessary for navigating today's media landscape. 

Module 2: Digital Literacy and Online Safety 

With the increasing reliance on digital platforms for information consumption, it's essential to understand digital literacy and online safety practices. This module covers topics such as identifying credible online sources, protecting personal data, recognizing online threats, online privacy, cybersecurity, and digital citizenship.

Module 3: Promoting Diversity and Inclusion in Media 

In this module, participants will learn how to advocate for diversity and inclusion in media representation, combatting stereotypes and promoting underrepresented voices.

Module 4: Fact-Checking and Verification  

This module equips participants with the skills and tools necessary to discern fact from fiction. Participants will learn how to evaluate the reliability of sources, spot misinformation tactics, and employ fact-checking techniques to ensure the accuracy of information.

Module 5: Media Literacy in Action,  Creating Responsible Content  

In this hands-on module, participants will apply their media literacy skills to create and share responsible content. Through group activities and projects, attendees will learn content creation best practices.

Module 6: Media Literacy Advocacy and Community Engagement 

This module focuses on empowering participants to become advocates for media literacy in their communities. Through discussions on advocacy strategies, outreach techniques, and community engagement initiatives, attendees will learn how to promote media literacy awareness and effect positive change in their local and online spheres.

Eligibility Criteria

  • This program warmly welcomes participants from across Africa (Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Central African Republic (CAR), Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe).
  • Applicants can come from Civil Society, New Media, Academia, Technology Fields, Digital Creators and Influencers and have expertise / interest in issues such as Combating Disinformation, Trends in Digital Technology, Digital and Media Literacy, Active Citizenship, Cyber Security, Social Media Campaigns, E-Governance, Web 3.0. (Metaverse, AI, etc), Journalism
  • Preferred ages 20 - 40
  • Proficient in conversational English
