"Information as a Public Good": A Journey of Enlightenment and Innovation

03 September 2023

As the curtains draw on the "Information as a Public Good" summit held in Brazil, it's time to reflect on the remarkable insights and accomplishments of this three-day event. This gathering of thought leaders, experts, and passionate individuals proved to be a catalyst for progress in the realms of information, disinformation, and the pursuit of truth in our digital age.

Day 1: A Symposium of Ideas

The inaugural day of the summit was filled with excitement and intellectual vigor. Eminent speakers and panelists took the stage to dissect the intricate landscapes of information, disinformation, and the elusive quest for truth in the digital era.

The discussions were nothing short of enlightening, with topics spanning the sources of disinformation, the significance of truth and trust, the role algorithms play in our democracy, and the critical need for media and civic literacy in education. The intellectual energy in the room was palpable, as minds united in a dynamic round-table discussion, aiming to tackle the challenges posed by disinformation through collaboration.

The recordings of these thought-provoking discussions are now available in English (here), Portuguese (here), and Spanish (here), ensuring a wider audience can benefit from the insights shared during the event.

Day 2: Innovation in Action

Day 2 was marked by a whirlwind of innovation and inspiration. The Youth Hackathon, guided by Problem-Based Learning methodology (provided by ZeitGeist, based on PBL and Design Thinking) and distinguished mentors, showcased the brilliant ideas of college participants eager to combat disinformation head-on. Engaging debates, expertly facilitated and evaluated, fueled the fire of innovation.

The winning team earned a coveted ticket to a future DCN event, a testament to the power of innovation in the fight against disinformation.

Day 3: A Journey of Enlightenment

On the final day of the summit, DCN leadership and esteemed experts embarked on enlightening visits to renowned institutions. These visits deepened our commitment to shaping a truthful digital landscape:

A Lasting Impact

While the "Information as a Public Good" journey may have ended, its impact continues to reverberate. The DCN Americas regional chapter remains committed to shaping truth in our digital world. This event fostered collaboration, networking, and innovation among South American experts and local professionals in the field of digital media. It served as a reminder that, in the pursuit of truth in the digital age, collective efforts and innovative solutions are our greatest assets. We look forward to the ripple effects of this summit, echoing through the corridors of information and disinformation, guiding us toward a brighter, more informed future.
