Youth and Digital Transformation: Challenges to media literacy and active citizenship

The Digital Communication Network Global and the Portulans Institute invite you to an online discussion about the 2022 edition of the Network Readiness Index (NRI) focusing on the role of youth in the process of Digital Transformation. This webinar will explore issues related to media literacy and active citizenship, including the importance of formal education, trust and social media in fostering youth engagement. 

Network Readiness Index 2022 

The 2022 report, titled ‘Stepping into the new digital era: how and why digital natives will shape the world’, is published by the Portulans Institute and Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford. 

Panel Discussion 

On the second part, well-known speakers from all over the world will open the discussion and will try to explore questions such as: 

  • Digital Natives are the future, but how future-ready are digital natives?
  • Does today’s formal education provide young people with required skills and competencies for an increasingly digital world? 
  • Is technology going to amplify digital divides rather than closing them?
  • What is the importance of appropriate tech and data governance policies in fostering trust and driving better engagement?
  • Are digital natives increasingly concerned about privacy from governments and corporations?
  • What is the future of social media and online communities from the Gen Z perspective?

Rafael Escalona Reynoso is the CEO and Secretary for the Board of Directors at Portulans Institute. Before joining the Portulans Team he was the Lead Researcher at The Global Innovation Index (GII) from 2013 to 2020. He is a leader leveraging a unique combination of data and policy analysis and public relations skills plus an ability to influence long-term strategy by demonstrating thought leadership on project management.

From his position as CEO he works closely with the GII Research Team at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and with the GII Advisory Board, Corporate Partners, and its newly-minted Academic Network. His previous professional experience was as a member of the Trade and Foreign Investment Advisory Board at the office of the President of Mexico and as Economic, Science and Technology Policy Advisor to the Senate of Mexico (LVIII Legislature).

 

Dr. Nikos S. Panagiotou is Associate Professor, School of Journalism and Mass Media Communication, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He has been a DAAD Scholar at Deutsche Welle, Chevening Scholar of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office UK, RCAP Scholar from APU University Japan, Scholar to Beijing Foreign Studies University, Scholar at Sabanci University (Turkey), Scholar of the State of Luxembourg. 

He has an extensive research work which has been funded from Google (DNI Initiative fund). He is the initiator and organizer of Thessaloniki International Media Summer Academy and in charge of Digital Communication Network Global and Director of Peace Journalism Lab School of Journalism and Mass Media Communication, Aristotle University. 

 

Alexandre is a journalist, educator and novelist. He is director of ZeitGeist organization in Brazil and international co-chairman of UNESCO MIL Alliance. He writes as a columnist for Revista Educação, Canal Futura website, and authored several books in the media education field, including "Idade Mídia - A Comunicação Reinventada na Escola". He is the host of the TV show "Idade Mídia", on Canal Futura, and the Radio show ABC da Notícia, on BandNews FM. He is a member of the advisory board of the Educamídia program (Palavra Aberta Institute + Google.ORG), of the academic journal Comunicar (Universidad de Huelva, Spain) and of the board of IC4ML (International Council for Media Literacy / US). He holds a Master degree in Artificial Intelligence and Ethics at PUC-SP, and a specialization in business and Innovation in University of California / Berkeley.  

 

Bianca C. Reisdorf, D.Phil., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina – Charlotte, USA. Her work focuses on the intersection of inequalities and digital media and the Internet, with a focus on digital inequalities among marginalized populations. In her recent research, Dr. Reisdorf has been focusing on internet access in correctional settings and how returning citizens navigate a technology-dependent world after release. In addition, she is interested in proxy Internet use as well as how Internet users look for and evaluate information from various media sources.




Mariam is a Senior Policy Associate who has worked extensively on research and policy analysis in the area of technology policy, emerging threats and digital rights.

Mariam is in charge of monitoring relevant national and international policy developments and leading long-term research projects relating to PI’s key focus areas: digital policy, innovation readiness, and digital transformation. She is the lead project manager for the Network Readiness Index (NRI) published in partnership with Saïd Business School, University of Oxford Additionally, she works closely with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), as well as our academic and corporate partners to coordinate the publication of the Global Innovation Index (GII).

Raashi Saxena is a trainer and strategy consultant for the Accesibility Lab with extensive experience as a technologist, social impact innovator and practitioner. She serves in a number of advisory roles, including for The Internet Rights & Principles Dynamic Coalition, Missions Publiques’s “We, the Internet" Project and Threading Change, a sustainable fashion non-profit. As an international speaker, Raashi has spoken on panels and conferences across Africa, Asia, and Europe. She was highlighted as an expert in Mozilla's 2022 Internet Health Report and Pew Research Center's 2021 Report on Digital Spaces. Recognized by World Economic Forum as one of the Six Inspirational Young Female Leaders, Saxena is currently the Curator of Global Shapers Bengaluru Hub and is one of the 300 leaders of the 2020 Women Deliver Young Leaders Program represented by 96 countries. Raashi is based in Bangalore, India.
